MONTREAL, QUEBEC. Dr.Dennis Reich,a general practitioner in Sudbury, Ontario, has solved a longstanding communications problem plaguing physicians who balance multiple shift schedules and locations. As an added bonus, his solution provides a backbone solution to the timely need for pandemic preparedness.

Reich’s software solution, called “Chyma™” (pronounced “ki-ma”), allows healthcare personnel everywhere from hospital emergency departments to public health units, to immediately access and coordinate manpower anywhere, at anytime, and provides accurate, timely and consistent information in the event of an outbreak or emergency.

Hospital personnel and shifts rotate and often involve multiple facilities. Locating a doctor can take hours using the current paper-based or older computer-based scheduling systems, which are often posted on walls and continually change. In a pandemic or other health emergency, this complex, and ineffective process makes it difficult and sometimes impossible to marshal and to communicate with al available healthcare professionals and resources. The need for fast, effective,real-time communications with physicians and other healthcare workers was a central recommendation of reports following SARS crisis.

As Chyma™ is web-based, its on-line connectivity provides a comprehensive, coordinated communications tool, which allows healthcare managers to access and mobilize manpower in any location, thereby reducing response time. Chyma™ increases the ability for healthcare professionals to get vital information to doctors and improve patient care in an emergency.

In Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, the group health centre, ten regional health facilities, clinics, hospitals, the coroner’s office and police department have decided to use Chyma™ in a citywide strategy.

“Pandemic preparedness means knowing where your resources are at all times,” said Dr Reich. “Being able to access physicians to coordinate and communicate critical information is most imperative. When the key players in Canada’s healthcare system want to coordinate cross-institutional communications, Chyma™ can help solve this problem.”

Approximately 5,000 Canadian physicians are using Chyma™, including 60 in Halifax and 50 in Burnaby, BC. After the SARS outbreak in Canada, the Scarborough General Hospital realized it needed a better tool to coordinate emergency physician scheduling and communications. They chose Chyma™.

Chyma’s™ targeted solutions for healthcare workers improves communications, reduces errors, saves time and money, and adds personal security to users on the front lines who need immediate access to safety and security information in preparation to help others.
